What’s so special about Saratoga Springs?

We are about a month away from the 2017 ÜBER Conference and wanted to find out a little bit more about Saratoga Springs from co-chair Kathleen Held.
How was Saratoga Springs chosen to host the 2017 SMPS Northeast Regional Conference?
The first year of the ÜBER Conference it was held in the Mid-Atlantic Region (Atlantic City), then New England (Boston), and for 2017 the host region was the New York Region. With sights set on either New York City or Saratoga Springs, the conference chairs loved the idea that the conference could be in a location that supported one of the smaller chapters in our region and chose Saratoga Springs.
What makes Saratoga Springs so special?
As soon as you arrive in Saratoga Springs, you are going to see why it is such a special place. Saratoga Springs was recently recognized with a Great American Main Street Award. The walkable downtown area is a short distance from our conference hotels with many boutiques and restaurants. In fact, there are more restaurants per capita than any other place in the United States! Saratoga is also nationally recognized as one of America’s great destination locations with attractions that include naturally carbonated mineral spas, harness racing, golf courses, historic museums, and beautiful parks.
When the planning committee visited Saratoga, we fell in love with the area and people. Everyone is so nice! We strived to structure the conference so that attendees get a flavor of the area. The Conference Hotel is the historic Gideon Putnam Resort, with 124 rooms. SMPS will have full run of the property for the duration of the conference! The hotel is in Saratoga Spa State Park and offers great opportunities for the runners, walkers, and golfers – there’s no excuse for Fit Bit junkies not to get their steps in!
Both of our evening networking events have been taken off-site from the Gideon Putnam. Wednesday evening’s event is being held at the Saratoga Auto Museum, a short walk from the hotel. After the event, there are dine around opportunities with busing provided downtown for attendees to have dinner on their own. Thursday evening, will be a night at the races as we’ll have front row seats for live harness racing at the Saratoga Harness Track – and dinner is included!
What would you say to the people who think Saratoga Springs is difficult to get to?
Honestly, I travel a fair amount for work and getting to Saratoga Springs was much easier than traveling into some of the large cities around the country. Attendees have the choice of flying, driving, or traveling by train. I will be traveling up from the Baltimore/DC Area and it’s a quick 1.5 hour flight with an average price of about $250 round trip. For those flying, rent a car or grab a cab from the Airport to the hotel. Travel time from the Airport to Hotel is about 20 minutes.
